Oriel

Project Overview

Oriel is an online magazine with 13 stories in five sections, a print issue, a podcast and a Sunday newsletter. A giant masthead, a lead-story slider and one red accent give it the look of a printed front page.

The Brief

Make a magazine site read like a printed front page while 13 stories, a podcast and an issue stay easy to find.

The Approach

Set the name as a giant masthead, lead with a story slider, and keep one red accent across white pages.

The Outcome

A complete magazine with sections, articles, contributors, a podcast and a print page, ready to reuse.

About the Project

Oriel is a complete online magazine for stories on how we live now: 13 stories across five sections, a print issue, a podcast and a Sunday newsletter. It is built around one idea: a printed front page on screen, with the name set as one very large masthead, white pages, black type and a single red accent. All stories, people and prices are demo content.

The home page opens on the masthead and a lead-story slider, then an Editor's pick, Night trains are back, and they're full. The latest lists the newest stories with an All 13 stories link, followed by Most read this week, Issue 07 The Slow Issue (212 pages), Oriel Radio with Episode 48, What makes a room feel calm, and The people who write Oriel. Five good stories, every Sunday, the newsletter sign-up, closes the page.

Behind it sit an All stories page, a page for each section (Culture, Design, Food, Technology, Travel), article pages with the writer, date and reading time, a Contributors page with eight profiles, Oriel Radio, a page for the print edition, About, Privacy and Terms.

The type is Gambarino for the masthead, headlines and card titles, and Geist for text. The palette is white, black and grey with Oriel red, and each section has its own label colour. Built with Astro, GSAP and Lenis.
